Photographic slides were once one of the most popular ways to capture and share family memories. From the 1950s through to the 1990s, millions of people used 35mm slides to record holidays, weddings, family celebrations and everyday moments. Stored carefully in carousels, boxes and slide cases, many of these photographs are now decades old — and unfortunately, they can fade, become damaged or simply be forgotten.

Negatives

Before digital cameras became part of everyday life, negatives were the essential starting point for almost every printed photograph. Film negatives contain the original photographic information captured by the camera, with colours and tones appearing reversed until they are processed into a finished print. From 35mm film used in everyday cameras to larger formats used by enthusiasts and professionals, negatives have been kept in albums, envelopes and drawers for generations.

The challenge is that negatives can deteriorate over time. Dust, scratches, fingerprints, moisture and ageing can all affect the film, while incorrectly stored negatives may become brittle or develop unwanted colour changes. Digitising them provides a practical way to preserve the photographic information contained within the film.

Our process begins by identifying the film type and preparing each negative for scanning. We use specialist film-scanning equipment to capture the detail contained within the original negative, then digitally invert the image so it becomes a normal photograph. The resulting files can be adjusted where necessary to improve exposure, colour and overall appearance, while keeping the image faithful to the original.

VHS Tapes

VHS became a household favourite from the late 1970s onwards, giving families a simple way to record birthdays, weddings, holidays, school performances and those everyday moments that were too special to forget. For many people, those tapes are now the only remaining record of important family memories. Unfortunately, VHS tapes were never designed to last forever. The magnetic tape can deteriorate with age, and playback equipment is becoming increasingly difficult to find.

At Slide Conversion, we transfer the content of your VHS tapes into modern digital formats, making your recordings much easier to watch and preserve. Each tape is checked and played through suitable equipment while the video and audio are captured digitally. We then create a digital copy that you can keep, back up and share with family without relying on an old VHS player.

VHS-C Tapes

VHS-C was designed as a smaller version of the standard VHS cassette, making it ideal for compact camcorders that became popular for recording family life, holidays and special occasions. Although the tapes are smaller, they face the same problems as full-size VHS — ageing tape, magnetic deterioration and increasingly hard-to-find playback equipment.

We carefully transfer your VHS-C recordings into digital files, capturing both the picture and sound so you can watch them without needing the original camcorder. Your recordings can then be safely stored, backed up and shared with family and friends.

Mini Dv Tapes

MiniDV brought digital video recording into the hands of families and enthusiasts, with its compact tapes becoming a popular choice for camcorders in the late 1990s and 2000s. From children's first steps to holidays, weddings and family gatherings, these small tapes can hold years of irreplaceable footage.

As MiniDV camcorders and playback equipment become harder to find, accessing those recordings can become increasingly difficult. We transfer your MiniDV tapes to modern digital formats, capturing the original video and audio so you can watch and preserve your footage without relying on ageing equipment.

Digital8 Tapes

Digital8 was introduced as a digital video format that used the familiar 8mm-style cassette, making it a popular choice for camcorders around the late 1990s and early 2000s. For many families, these tapes contain some of their earliest digitally recorded memories.
